Might have gone with the i7 processor, but the i5 is still a powerful processor and within my budget.

This must change.
I have a Lenovo Ideapad y550p. It started falling apart in its first year, when the front of the DVD/CD tray came off. I had such trouble getting through to "support" that I gave up. After all, the problem was more cosmetic than anything, and I didn't use the DVD/CD tray much. But just a few weeks back (after about 1.5 years of use), the battery developed a bizarre problem and would not charge. No, this isn't the usual battery wear out which occurs gradually. In addition, it seems that the USB ports are also failing.
Now, I am pretty good with computers. The way I keep them up, they typically last so long that I just toss them. It's not that hard: control power surges; run software that corrects hardware and software problems early on; and so on. I have NEVER had a machine... Read more
